The 2024/25 campaign has drawn to a close with Golcar United Ladies FC firmly establishing themselves as contenders in the West Riding County Women’s Football League Division One. A third-place finish marks significant progress for a club continuing to develop both on and off the pitch.
Finishing third with 40 points from 18 matches represents an excellent achievement. Recording 13 wins, one draw and just four defeats, the team displayed quality at both ends of the pitch, scoring 53 goals while maintaining a robust defence, resulting in an outstanding +50 goal difference.
Only champions Thackley, who remained unbeaten throughout, and runners-up Knaresborough Town finished above Golcar in what proved to be a competitive division.
This season’s success was built on a solid, difficult-to-break-down defence and resilient mentality throughout the squad. This defensive organisation and attacking quality created a formidable unit capable of challenging the division’s best teams.

Wing-backs Ellie Thornton and Trinity Cundall brought energy and dynamism to the flanks, providing both defensive security and attacking threat with their ability to transition quickly from defence to attack.
Defender Lilia Aspeling stepped up impressively into open-age football, showing maturity beyond her years, while right-sided defender Kacie Clayton displayed considerable skill in her defensive duties.
In midfield, Megan Egdell established herself as a reliable presence, combining technical ability with tireless work rate.
Striker Paige Tandy was a significant addition to the attacking options, contributing important goals throughout the campaign and forming effective partnerships with fellow forwards.
The squad was strengthened further by experienced signings who brought quality and leadership.
Goalkeeper Marina Boni joined late in the season but made an immediate impact in her two appearances, showing great promise with her commanding presence.

Larissa Lawson provided valuable quality at right wing-back, while midfielders Ruby Greaves and Rose Priestley added creativity and technical ability to central areas.
Striker Steph Teale’s experience complemented the attacking unit, before injury unfortunately limited her contribution.
The Autumn campaign began with a closely contested 2-1 home defeat to eventual runners-up Knaresborough Town, but the response was immediate. A comprehensive 5-1 victory at local rivals Huddersfield Amateur Firsts was followed by a commanding 5-0 win against Hepworth United.
A narrow 2-1 defeat at champions Thackley demonstrated our ability to compete with the division’s best, while a 4-1 victory at Brayton Belles and a 5-1 home win against Bradford City U23 further confirmed our potential.
October’s 3-2 defeat at Ackworth Girls provided valuable lessons, and the response, a remarkable 10-1 victory over Republica Internationale, showcased the team’s character and attacking capability.
November brought continued success with a 2-0 away victory at Leeds Hyde Park Firsts, followed by a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Knaresborough Town, demonstrating significant progress since the opening day defeat.
The winter period saw further impressive performances, including a 6-0 away victory at Hepworth United in January and a tactically astute 4-2 win at Bradford City U23 in February.
The final third of the season saw Golcar reach its peak. Consecutive home victories against Leeds Hyde Park Firsts (3-0) and Brayton Belles (2-0) were followed by an emphatic 6-0 away win at Republica Internationale.

Perhaps the most satisfying result came with the comprehensive 8-0 victory against Ackworth Girls, a perfect response to the earlier season defeat and clear evidence of the team’s development.
The final fixture against champions Thackley resulted in a narrow 1-0 defeat. Still, the performance against the unbeaten league winners showed promising signs for the future, as we matched them across the pitch for extended periods.
We await the league’s decision regarding our postponed match against Huddersfield Amateur Firsts, who could not field a team. While additional points would not affect our third-place finish, they would further underline the team’s strong performance.
The cup competitions provided further opportunities for development, with the team making impressive progress in the League Cup. A comprehensive 8-0 Home victory against Lepton Highlanders and a dominant 5-0 away win at Leeds City demonstrated our quality before a semi-final defeat to eventual champions Thackley.
The County Cup saw us face Premier League opposition in Ilkley Town Firsts, with the 6-0 defeat providing valuable experience against the league champions who secured promotion. This calibre of opposition represents exactly the standard we aspire to reach.
Between the posts, experienced goalkeeper Demi-Sue Wood, who has been with Golcar since the beginning, provided reliable performances, with Marina Boni making a significant impact in her late-season appearances. Amy Gibson, who has played outfield in the past and scored valuable goals, offered additional security when called upon.

The defensive unit was anchored by Raegen Cartledge, whose centre-back performances combined leadership with timely interventions and threat from set-pieces. Alongside her, Robyn Maloney was the most reliable and underrated centre-back, consistently delivering composed performances. As one of the founders of Golcar Ladies United with Chloe Peel, Maloney’s commitment to the club extends beyond her on-field contributions.
Lilia Aspeling developed impressively throughout the season, while Lois Smith, though not featuring in matches, remained a valuable squad member whose commitment to training and team spirit was exemplary.
Trinity Cundall and Ellie Thornton excelled in the wing-back roles, with Larissa Lawson providing experience at right-sided wing-back when called upon.
Lily Taylor deserves special mention for her contribution to the squad. Though appearing in just four matches, two as emergency goalkeeper and a five-minute cameo in the season finale, her value extended far beyond the pitch.

Never complaining about selection decisions and always willing to prioritise team needs, Lily helped with the VEO camera and social media accounts, earning praise and clubwide universal respect for her positive attitude.
Defender Rebecca Moore spent the season recovering from a long-term injury but remained a valued squad member. Her contributions off the pitch, helping at training sessions, serving as a ball girl during matches, and maintaining a warm, encouraging presence, exemplified the team-first mentality that defines the club.
The midfield was often the platform for success, with captain Ainsley Strickland leading by example with her energy, tactical awareness, and crucial goals from the number 10 position.

Lauren Buckley and Ruby Greaves formed an impressive partnership, combining technical ability, vision, and game intelligence. Hannah Lynch made fewer appearances, but each was impactful, even filling in at centre-back when needed and performing admirably.
Caitlin (Keira Walsh) Caselton brought experience and composure whenever called upon, while Rose Priestley and Megan Egdell offered different qualities, allowing for tactical flexibility and ensuring fresh energy throughout matches.
Experienced midfielder Holly Knott was unfortunately sidelined with a long-term injury but remained an essential presence around the squad.
In attack, Paige Tandy’s clinical finishing was complemented by Charlotte Parker’s contribution before her maternity leave. We wish her all the best with the baby. Eleanor Smith provided width and crossing ability, while her cousin Millie Smith offered energetic performances.

Striker Maddie Walsh brought valuable experience to the forward line with her intelligent movement and finishing ability until injury and work commitments sidelined her for much of the season. She made a welcome return as a substitute in the final match against Thackley.
Strikers Chloe Roberts and Phoebe Senior were unfortunately mostly absent due to long-term injuries. At the same time, Sophie Walsh, an experienced winger transitioning to wing-back, spent most of her season recovering and will be available next season.
Behind every successful team is a dedicated support structure whose contribution often goes unrecognised but is essential to achievement.
Stephanie Strickland has been the squad’s multi-talented physio, social media expert, sponsorship coordinator, and more. From conducting matchday interviews to preparing meals and always being available to support players, Stephanie has been instrumental in the seamless operation behind the scenes.

Equally important have been Groundsman Armo and Kitman Kersh, who consistently dedicate their time to ensuring the pitch meets excellent standards and all kit is maintained correctly. Their commitment to providing the best possible environment has been invaluable to the team’s success.
Under the guidance of manager Nathan Martin and assistant manager Stewart Alexander, Golcar United Ladies have developed a clear playing identity based on technical quality, tactical awareness, and physical resilience.

The coaching team’s detailed approach in training sessions has accelerated individual development, while their tactical adjustments during matches proved decisive on numerous occasions.
Integrating new signings alongside established players was expertly managed, creating a cohesive unit that consistently exceeded expectations.
With solid foundations established, expectations naturally rise for the 2025/26 campaign. Based on this season’s performances, particularly against the top teams, Golcar United Ladies will aim to challenge for promotion while continuing to develop their distinctive playing style.
The experience gained from competing at the top end of the division will prove invaluable, and with potential for further squad development, there are strong reasons for optimism looking ahead.
