This was not the afternoon we wanted. A 0–9 result isn’t easy to take, especially with centre-back Trinity Cundell stretchered off during the second half. Thankfully, she has been given the all-clear from A&E, diagnosed with muscle damage, and we all wish her a swift recovery.
But even in the hardest of results, one thing stood out. Despite the score, our players held their nerve and stuck to everything we’ve built this season. Thackley brought their class with ex-national league players, and while their quality told today, our squad showed the fighting spirit that defines Golcar United Ladies.
Player Recognition
Player of the Match goes to debutant Emily Holroyd. Despite the pressure, she showed composure and resilience from the start. Also welcome to fellow debutants Thia Smith, Phoebe Senior, and Kaidy Firth, who, along with Emily, stepped up when we needed it most.
Substitutions:
36′ – Ellie Thornton came on for Phoebe Senior, bringing renewed energy.
65′ – After Trinity’s departure, Ellie returned and added fresh legs and commitment to the battle.
60′ – Kaidy Firth replaced Phoebe again, showing readiness despite the difficult situation.
From the Dugout
Manager Nathan Martin admitted the scoreline was hard to take but stressed the positives.
“Of course we’re disappointed, but I’m proud of the character shown today. Even at 9–0 down, nobody gave in, nobody hid, and that tells me everything about this squad. We’ll learn from this, we’ll grow, and we’ll be stronger for it. Thackley are one of the toughest sides we’ll face all season, and now we know the level we need to get to.”
Assistant manager Stewart Alexander echoed those thoughts, praising the resilience of the group.
“Despite the score, the work rate was excellent throughout. Heads never dropped, and that demonstrates the kind of team spirit that will carry us through the season. Today was a reality check, but also a reminder of how far we’ve already come. This is just the first step in our Premier Division journey.”
Onwards to Knaresborough Town
Next up, we head out to Knaresborough Town AFC on 14 September, kick-off at 2 PM. Today’s result stings, but if there’s one thing we know, as a team, we rise together.
