GOLCAR – As International Women’s Day is celebrated across the globe today, the remarkable story of Golcar United Ladies FC stands as a powerful testament to the growing influence and impact of women in football.
The West Yorkshire club represents a microcosm of the women’s football revolution sweeping across Britain – driven by passionate players, dedicated volunteers, and a community determined to help wherever they can.
“What we’re building here is more than just a football team,” explains Nathan Martin, Golcar United Ladies’ manager. “It’s a movement that shows young girls, through to our open-aged women’s team in our community, that they belong on the pitch just as much as anyone else.”
Manager Nathan Martin, along with assistant manager Stewart Alexander, juggles full-time businesses while managing coaching responsibilities, which epitomizes the dedication driving women’s football forward.
“Days like International Women’s Day give us a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come, but also how much further we still need to go,” says Stephanie Strickland, club physio, media expert, and mom manager. “Every training session, every match is another brick in building something that will outlast all of us.”
The women’s team’s rise to division one hasn’t been without challenges. Three seasons ago, there were a bunch of ladies getting together for fun kickarounds. Led then by our current center-back, Robyn Peel, and handed over to Nathan Martin, they are now (following back-to-back promotions) sitting in third place and have earned a growing reputation as one of the region’s most progressive women’s teams.
Team captain Ainsley Strickland, who has been with the club since 2021, has witnessed the transformation firsthand.
“When I started, we’d be lucky to get a handful of people watching our matches. Now we’re regularly pulling crowds of 50-plus,” Strickland reveals. “Fans come up to us after games thanking us for a great game. That’s something none of us could have imagined.”
As they mark International Women’s Day, Golcar United Ladies are focused on both immediate sporting goals and their longer-term legacy.
“We’re fighting for promotion this season, but we’re also fighting for equality, recognition, and respect,” says A. Stickland. “Every pass, tackle, and goal helps normalize women’s football for the next generation.”
The club’s message resonates beyond their Yorkshire home, embodying the spirit of the day itself: celebrating achievement while acknowledging the journey ahead.
As A. Strickland puts it: “We’re stronger together, on and off the pitch. That’s what today is about – recognizing how far women have come in all fields, including football while supporting each other to go even further.”
For the players and volunteers of Golcar United Ladies, International Women’s Day isn’t just a celebration – it’s a rallying cry for the revolution they’re leading in women’s sport, one match at a time.
To every woman in our club, You inspire us with your hard work, commitment, and unwavering spirit. Together, we break barriers and show the world what women in sports can achieve. Let’s continue to rise, support each other, and lead with pride!
