GOLCAR – In an emotionally charged afternoon at the Skye Direct Stadium, Golcar United Ladies delivered a commanding performance to defeat Leeds Hyde Park 3-0, completing a season double over their West Yorkshire rivals.
The match began with a poignant one-minute silence in memory of Poppy Hopkins, a young footballer who tragically lost her life last week while playing the sport she loved. The respectful tribute set the tone for a day where football’s community spirit was on full display.
When the action got underway under bright sunshine, the hosts immediately stamped their authority on proceedings, though Leeds Hyde Park’s disciplined defensive setup initially frustrated Golcar’s attacking efforts.
The breakthrough finally came in the 31st minute through Ainsley Strickland, who demonstrated her predatory instincts. Ruby Greaves unleashed a powerful strike that forced an excellent save from the Leeds goalkeeper, but Strickland reacted quickest to convert the rebound and give Golcar a deserved advantage.
Leeds Hyde Park, to their credit, remained competitive as the teams headed into the interval with the hosts holding a slender 1-0 lead.
Golcar emerged for the second period with renewed determination and doubled their advantage ten minutes after the restart. Strickland turned provider this time, delivering a precise pass to release Paige Tandy, who skillfully evaded her marker before firing an unstoppable shot into the top corner.
The midfield battle intensified as Leeds sought a route back into the contest, but Golcar’s superior quality eventually told when they added a third through a move of genuine quality. Ruby Greaves orchestrated the attack from midfield, threading a pinpoint through ball to Eleanor Smith, whose perfectly timed run behind the defense allowed her to deliver an inch-perfect cross for Strickland to tap home her second of the afternoon.
Manager, Nathan Martin made several astute substitutions in the closing stages to see out the game professionally, securing not just three points but also a valuable clean sheet against one of the division’s more formidable opponents.
“Completing the double over Leeds Hyde Park shows just how far we’ve come this season,” Martin expressed after the match. “The girls executed our game plan perfectly today, and I couldn’t be prouder of their performance, especially given the emotional circumstances.”
Strickland’s brace takes her season tally to 11 goals, while the defensive unit recorded their seventh clean sheet of the campaign, something which assistant manager, Stewart Alexander is particularly proud of saying, “A lot of work has been done in this department.”
