A sun-drenched Skye Direct Stadium provided the perfect backdrop as Golcar United Ladies produced a clinical performance to defeat fourth-placed Ackworth Girls 8-0 on Sunday afternoon.
With memories of their earlier 3-2 away defeat to Ackworth still fresh, Golcar wasted no time in asserting their authority. Just two minutes into the contest, captain Ainsley Strickland opened the scoring to give the hosts an early advantage.
The early momentum continued as Strickland turned provider in the sixth minute, setting up Paige Tandy, who finished clinically to double Golcar’s lead.
Playing with confidence and fluidity despite challenging pitch conditions, Golcar’s attractive, progressive football delighted the home supporters enjoying refreshments in the spring sunshine.
Ackworth, demonstrating the quality that has earned them fourth place in the league standings, responded with a period of sustained pressure. For approximately ten minutes, the visitors pushed forward in search of a foothold in the match, though they struggled to create clear opportunities in the final third.
Golcar’s third goal arrived in the 33rd minute when Tandy’s powerful shot deflected off an Ackworth defender and into the net for an own goal, extending the home side’s advantage before the interval.
Manager Nathan Martin made a tactical adjustment before halftime, introducing Ellie Thornton to replace Lilia Aspeling, who departed to appreciative applause following an impressive second appearance for the club.
Golcar maintained their intensity after the restart, with Strickland completing her brace from the penalty spot in the 48th minute. After being fouled in the area, the captain calmly converted into the bottom left corner to make it 4-0.
Despite the scoreline, Ackworth continued to compete with admirable determination. The visitors’ most significant opportunity to end Golcar’s run of five consecutive clean sheets came from a powerful close-range effort, but new signing Marina Boni produced what many observers described as an extraordinary save to preserve the shutout.
Raegen Cartledge added a fifth for Golcar in the 52nd minute, converting from Ruby Greaves’ assist. The midfield partnership of Greaves and Lauren Buckley consistently won their individual duels, providing a solid foundation for the team’s attacking play.
Martin made further changes in the 55th minute, introducing Millie Smith for her cousin Eleanor Smith and bringing on long-serving goalkeeper Demi-Sue Wood to replace Boni.
The substitutions did nothing to disrupt Golcar’s rhythm, and Smith made an immediate impact, scoring Golcar’s sixth goal in the 65th minute from a well-placed assist by Tandy.
Rose Priestley added a seventh three minutes later, finishing from Ellie Thornton’s creative setup as Golcar continued to demonstrate their free-flowing football despite the dry, bouncy surface making ball control challenging.
A final substitution saw Megan Egdell replace the influential Strickland in the 70th minute, with Martin managing his captain’s playing time following a recent injury concern.
With both teams visibly tiring but continuing to produce entertaining football, Martin made one final change in the 80th minute, reintroducing Lilia Aspeling for Ruby Greaves.
Cartledge completed the scoring in the 89th minute to claim her second goal of the match, converting from Tandy’s assist to round off an emphatic 8-0 victory.
Trinity Cundall delivered a standout performance, transitioning seamlessly between defensive responsibilities and attacking contributions from her wing-back position. Her maturity belied her youth as she made crucial tackles and intelligent runs that consistently troubled the Ackworth defense. This complete display earned her the match sponsor’s Player of the Match award.
The goal-scoring was impressively distributed across the team, with Strickland scoring twice, Cartledge also netting a brace, and single goals from Tandy, Smith, and Priestley, along with an own goal, demonstrating the attacking threat Golcar possesses throughout their squad.
Despite the comprehensive scoreline, both teams competed in excellent spirit, providing an entertaining advertisement for women’s football. The result doesn’t reflect the determination and quality shown by an Ackworth side that has impressed throughout the season.
Manager Nathan Martin expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance: “Today was about demonstrating the progress we’ve made since our last meeting with Ackworth. The early goals settled us into our rhythm, but what pleased me most was how we maintained our concentration and continued to play our style of football right to the final whistle. Scoring eight is obviously pleasing, but the clean sheet is equally important for us.”
Assistant Manager Stewart Alexander added: “The conditions were challenging today with the dry, bouncy pitch, but the players showed excellent technical ability to keep the ball on the ground and play through the lines. Trinity’s performance epitomized what we’ve been working on in training – solid defensive work combined with intelligent forward movement. We’re seeing the benefits of everyone’s hard work as we approach the end of the season.”
Golcar United Ladies and staff extend their thanks to Ackworth and wish them continued success as they look ahead to next season’s encounters.
With one fixture remaining, Wednesday, 7th May (7.30 PM kickoff) against an unbeaten and already promoted Thackley – Golcar will be looking to maintain this impressive form and finish their campaign on a high note.
