Golcar United Ladies continued their pre-season preparations with a 2-2 draw away to Dewsbury Moor FC on Wednesday evening, in a game played under testing hot and humid conditions.
Battling Display in Tough Conditions
Both sides approached the match with determination, making for an entertaining contest despite the energy-sapping weather. Golcar worked hard to put into practice some of the new patterns and positional rotations introduced in training, and there were encouraging spells where the passing tempo and attacking movement caused real problems for the hosts.
Two Well-Taken Goals
The visitors’ first goal came from a move started and finished by two experienced campaigners. Captain Robyn Peel’s vision split the Dewsbury defence, releasing Lauren Buckley who applied a composed finish to level the game.
The second goal brought a touch of friendly controversy. A driven effort from Tiah Smith was heading goalwards when Phoebe Senior arrived to help it over the line. Whether the ball had already crossed before the final touch was still being debated long after the final whistle, but the celebrations were the same either way.
Valuable Pre-Season Minutes
With the squad continuing to gel ahead of the new campaign, this fixture provided another step towards full match sharpness. Players adapted well to the conditions, showing discipline without the ball and flashes of creativity in attack.
Manager Nathan Martin praised the effort and application shown across the pitch:
“Considering the conditions tonight, the players worked incredibly hard. There were moments where we moved the ball exactly how we’ve been training, and it was great to see that come to life. Dewsbury gave us a proper test, and I’m pleased with how we responded. These games are about building fitness and understanding, and we’re doing that with each run out.”
Assistant Manager Stewart Alexander also highlighted the positives from the performance:
“What I’ve been most encouraged by is the intent we’re showing every time we step on the pitch. We’re seeing more confidence to take the ball in tight areas, more communication between players, and a willingness to work for each other. That’s the kind of mentality that will serve us well when the season starts.”
