Golcar United Ladies Show Resilience to Earn Point in End-to-End Draw at Wyke Wanderers

Golcar United Ladies showed tremendous character and togetherness to come away with a hard-earned point in a thrilling 3–3 draw away at Wyke Wanderers in the Premier Division.

Played in cold and windy conditions on a 4G surface at Wyke Community Sports Village, the match was an end-to-end battle from the opening minutes to the final whistle.

Early Setback

The afternoon got off to the worst possible start when Sophie Scherschel went down injured just under two minutes into the game with a suspected ACL injury. The early stoppage was a difficult moment for the squad, with Sophie not only a key player on the pitch but an important presence off it as well.

Ellie Thornton was introduced early and settled quickly, helping the team regroup and refocus.

Wyke took advantage of the disruption and opened the scoring in the second minute to make it 1–0.

Golcar Fight Back

Despite the setback, Golcar responded with composure and belief. Their pressure paid off in the 33rd minute when Larissa Lawson delivered a lovely cross into the box for Tiah Smith, who calmly tapped the ball into the bottom corner to equalise.

Just seven minutes later, Golcar turned the game on its head. Tiah Smith returned the favour with an assist, teeing up Paige Tandy, who struck a superb half-volley into the roof of the net to give Golcar a 2–1 lead going into half-time.

Second Half Drama

Wyke came out strongly after the break and restored parity in the 52nd minute before edging ahead again on the hour mark to make it 3–2.

Golcar refused to fold and continued to play with purpose and intensity. The equaliser arrived in the 74th minute following another well-worked team move. Tiah Smith was again involved, providing the assist for Larissa Lawson, who smashed the ball high into the net to level the score at 3–3.

A late substitution saw Hannah Lynch replace Megan Egdell in the 71st minute, helping steady the ship as Golcar managed the closing stages well to secure a valuable away point.

Player Recognition

Player of the Match went to Larissa Lawson, who led by example and made a decisive impact at both ends of the pitch.
Also deserving of special mention was Tiah Smith, who played a key role throughout with a goal and two assists.

It was also good to see Rebecca Moore return from injury and back involved with the squad.

Manager’s Reaction

Manager Nathan Martin said:
“Really pleased with the character shown. Losing a huge player, not just on the pitch but off the pitch, can always affect players, especially just two minutes into the game. To show that togetherness and resilience, play the remaining 88 minutes, and come away with a great point is brilliant.”

Next Match

Golcar United Ladies are back on the road next weekend as they face Forge Way away at Batley Sports and Tennis Centre on 2 November 2025, kick-off at 2.00pm.

A performance full of fight, resilience, and togetherness, and another important step forward in the Premier Division journey. 💚
