Golcar United Ladies continued their pre-season preparations with a hard-fought 1-1 draw away at Brighouse Town on Sunday afternoon, in what proved to be another valuable step towards the new campaign.
Hot Conditions, High Effort
Played under testing heat, the game demanded energy and concentration from start to finish. Both sides moved the ball quickly, making for a lively contest that gave Golcar the chance to put into practice the ideas and structures worked on in recent training sessions.
Brighouse started sharply and were first to score, capitalising on a defensive lapse to edge ahead. The hosts looked confident in possession, but Golcar responded positively, gradually finding rhythm and creating chances of their own.
Smith on Target
The equaliser came before half-time, with in-form striker Tiah Smith once again proving decisive. Linking up neatly through midfield, Golcar carved open the Brighouse defence and Smith provided the finish to make it 1-1 going into the interval. It was another reminder of her ability to adapt and impact matches since joining the squad this summer.
A Battle of Margins
The second half saw both teams continue to press for a winner, but opportunities came and went without either side finding the breakthrough. For Golcar, there were plenty of positives in the way they kept the ball moving simply, giving players time and space to support each other. However, small lapses at key moments prevented them from turning possession into decisive chances.
The game also highlighted areas for development. Too often Golcar lost out on first and second balls, with the opposition quicker to react to loose play. While the build-up through midfield was promising, attacks sometimes broke down with a loose pass or heavy touch.
Despite this, the squad showed strong spirit, maintaining intensity in difficult conditions and refusing to let standards drop in the latter stages.
Manager’s View
Manager Nathan Martin was clear about the lessons to take forward:
“There was a lot to like about today, especially the way we kept the ball at times. Some of the football we played was really composed and gave us the platform to move with freedom. But we have to want it more — the urgency has to be there in every moment. The little cracks we saw today need to be addressed quickly, and that’s the challenge we’ve set ourselves as the season gets closer.”
Assistant Manager’s Reflections
Assistant Manager Stewart Alexander echoed those thoughts after reviewing the match:
“It was a strong run out, but what stood out to me is that we still need to be sharper in key areas. Winning the first ball and then securing the second is non-negotiable. Too many times we stood off, thinking the job would be done, and that let Brighouse back in. There was some lovely build-up play, but quality in the final action has to improve. That’s the difference between a draw and a win at this level. The good thing is the intent was there, and if we keep building with this mindset, we’ll be ready when it matters.”
Final Score
Brighouse Town 1 – 1 Golcar United Ladies
